I haven't cracked this one yet — but the brilliant team at Fifteensquared have:

Sound-alike (can be made out = can be heard) of FANE (no, I’d never heard of it either, but the dictionaries tell me it’s an old word for a temple). Assume = feign = to pretend, as in “to assume an air of authority”.
