The most obvious correlation is between BESIDE and “next to”; both BESIDE and ‘next’ can be used as various parts of speech, and there may be usages where they are more nearly equivalent, but off the top of my head I cannot think of one. I did consider “… and beside, the wench is dead”, but a) the quote is “besides”, although either would do, and b) although “next” would fit in and make sense, I am not convinced that it is a near enough synonym. Maybe. The answer is BESIDE.
