A charade of M (‘ M otorist at first’) plus RTOAD, an envelope (‘captivated by’) of T (‘tense’) in ROAD (‘highway’), for Toad of Toad Hall, who first appeared in Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows . The definition is extended.
