I haven't cracked this one yet — but the brilliant team at Times for the Times have:

first of Logistics + RANG (phoned), all reversed. Come to think of it, this went in with a shrug at the time. I’m not sure about the synonymy: a knot in a tree, or to domineer, perhaps?
