King Charlie not prepared to carry key climbing gear (8)

I haven't cracked this one yet — but the brilliant team at Times for the Times have:

K for king, NIT for charlie, RAW (not prepared) reversed, with A (a key) inserted. I was delayed by thinking  it was  beginning with CR and failing to lift and separate “climbing” and “gear”.
