I haven't cracked this one yet — but the brilliant team at Fifteensquared have:

LASH (hammer, as a verb = make a sustained attack on, especially as in “storms lashing the country”), containing (consuming) E (abbreviation for energy). Lead = leash = a strap fixed to a dog’s collar to keep it under control.
