Light during day charges pointer? (3,6)

I haven't cracked this one yet — but the brilliant team at Times for the Times have:

IN (during) + D (day) contained by (charges) BOWWOW (dog, pointer?). I had ‘bay’ for a while, not being totally familiar with the spelling of ‘bowwow’ which still looks odd.
