Manipulate communication with American for leading European (7)

I haven't cracked this one yet — but the brilliant team at Fifteensquared have:

M e SSAGE (communication) with A (American) instead of E (European). As E stands for European we don’t actually need to know that Eccles wants us to use the first or ‘leading’ letter in European. However, it does help with the surface reading.
