Misfit team manager is one using English left back (5)

I haven't cracked this one yet — but the brilliant team at Fifteensquared have:

E (abbreviation for English) + PORT (left, in nautical terminology), all reversed (back). Not sure about the definition here: trope = a frequently-encountered concept (perhaps a slightly less disparaging term than cliché), but I’m not familiar with “misfit team manager” as one.
