I haven't cracked this one yet — but the brilliant team at Fifteensquared have:

BIDE n (President missing last letter or ‘almost’) and T roop S (first and last letters only or ‘evacuated’). We were a bit puzzled by the definition at first because we were linking ‘behind’ to the wordplay.
