I haven't cracked this one yet — but the brilliant team at Times for the Times have:
PAY (remuneration) around (comprises) PER (a) M (million) ONE I knew this ended with ‘money’, but assumed for a long time that the definition would be ‘remuneration’. Once I realized how PAY came into things, the penny dropped.
