Soldiers criticise American lawyer, a playful individual (5,5)

I haven't cracked this one yet — but the brilliant team at Fifteensquared have:

GI (American soldier) + ANT (possibly a soldier ant) = two “soldiers”; then PAN (as a verb = criticise harshly) + DA (abbreviation for District Attorney = American lawyer). I’m not sure about the definition. It’s a big bear with teeth, spends most of its time eating, and (as an adult at least) is generally solitary. But I suppose baby ones are considered playful.
