The Scots Language centre tells me that JO is a Scots variant of ‘joy’, and can mean a sweetheart or lover, or be a term of endearment akin to ‘dear’ or ‘darling’. I know why the setter has had to use this word (naff all else fits) but in my opinion this is obscure and the Scots dialect word is rather unfair.
